The Annapurna Circuit - the adventure begins

The Annapurna Circuit is a horseshoe-shaped trail that passes through the Annapurna massif

So here I am, about to go trekking through mountains again.

Last year’s devastating earthquake led to a decline in the number of visitors on which Nepal’s economy relies so much. So hiking through the mountains and visiting the villages, temples and shrines along the way seems the logical way of seeing the country and also supporting local businesses. From what I can tell, a guide isn’t necessary for the circuit but I’ve hired one anyway – however much walking you try to get out of London to do, it’s absolutely no comparison. I think I’ll be much more content having someone from the area who knows the terrain showing me around – and perhaps she’ll have some stories to tell.

Following my previous chat about the wilderness, I should mention that the Annapurna Circuit is so popular these days that some parts of it are being flattened to make way for roads so that people can opt to do sections of it to suit whatever time they have available. But there’s still enough of it left for it to be classed as one of the most classic treks in the world. As you know by now (!) I love hiking and I love mountains and thought it was about time to go there.

I'm not sure yet when I'll be able to update this blog again. I may need to rely on old fashioned pen and paper to make notes and write it up afterwards (sort of a relief to get away from a keyboard but my handwriting has definitely gone downhill in recent years).

Anyway, bidha pau and see you soon!
